Minister Leo Varadkar has endorsed Independent Senator Averil Power’s Seanad election campaign.

Senator Power is contesting the election for one of the three Seanad seats elected by graduates of Trinity College Dublin. She is a former President of Trinity Students Union and has always maintained strong links with the college.

Speaking at Trinity, Minister Varadkar said “I will be giving Averil Power my number one vote in the Seanad election and urge other Trinity graduates to do the same. I have known her since college, where she was an excellent president of the Students Union. I really respected her leadership in the marriage equality campaign. She has also been a constructive and effective member of the Seanad and I hope she is re-elected.”

Senator Power’s campaign is also backed by a range of other high profile figures including businesswoman Norah Casey, author John Banville, CEO of Headstrong Dr. Tony Bates, mental health advocates Conor Cusack and Niall Breslin, former head of the INTO John Carr and the Chairperson of Marriage Equality Gráinne Healy.

Polling in the TCD and NUI Seanad elections starts today and closes on 26th April.
